Company History
NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY HISTORY
Northwestern University was founded in 1851 by a group of nine Methodist leaders who sought to establish a higher education institution to serve the Northwest Territory. The university opened its doors in 1855 with just 10 students. Over the years, it has grown into one of the world's premier research institutions, known for its excellence in the sciences, engineering, humanities, and social sciences. Throughout its history, Northwestern has been at the forefront of innovation, from pioneering advancements in nanotechnology and materials science to shaping media and public policy. Today, it continues to uphold its founding mission of academic excellence and public service while expanding its impact globally.
CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT HISTORY
Established in 1884 on the shores of Lake Michigan in Evanston, Illinois, the Department of Chemistry has a rich history of pioneering contributions to the field. Initially housed in Fayerweather Hall—the first building in the Chicagoland area dedicated exclusively to science—the department awarded its first chemistry thesis in 1896. Over the decades, the department has been instrumental in solidifying chemical nomenclature, developing molecular model kits for education, and advancing catalysis research under the guidance of esteemed chemists like Vladimir Ipatieff. The construction of the Technological Institute in 1942 further bolstered the department's capacity for interdisciplinary collaboration and research excellence.
IMSERC FACILITY HISTORY
The Integrated Molecular Structure Education and Research Center (IMSERC) began its existence as the Analytical Services Laboratory (ASL) at Northwestern University under the direction of Prof. Claude Lucchesi in 1968 as one of the first shared analytical instrumentation labs at a US academic institution. It was renamed to IMSERC in 2008 after adding significant new capabilities and a modern facility expansion in 2012. With the state-of-the-art instrumentations, IMSERC provides rapid access to Crystallography, Mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy, and many other commonly used analytical techniques to students and research groups at Northwestern University and the greater Chicago Area. IMSERC is a proud member of the NSF funded Soft and Hybrid Nanotechnology Experimental Resource (SHyNE).
